On 15 May each year, Gubbio hosts an unusual race up Monte Ingino, the mountain behind the town and relay teams carry huge wooden “candles” up to the church of the town’s patron saint.
Gubbio is built in local stone which has a beautiful pinkish hue - many houses in the surrounding countryside are built in the same stone.
Gubbio is a wonderfully preserved mediaeval town in northern Umbria, somewhat off the beaten track and therefore with a less “touristy” feel than many other mediaeval towns. Along with Deruta, Gubbio is known for maiolica ceramics and there are several shops in the old town.
