South of Siena towards the drier, wilder Val d’Orcia there are fewer tourists and property becomes more affordable. This is a land of mediaeval castles, ancient spas and wider views that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004.

There are small villages of great beauty such as Pienza, known as “one of the most perfect Renaissance cities”. Medieval and Renaissance Montepulciano is the highest of all the Tuscan hilltop towns. The town sits on a ridge southeast of Siena providing standout glimpses of the encircling countryside with fields of sunflowers and vines. Within the city walls the facades of the pale townhouses and palazzi remain largely untouched since the sixteenth century. Montepulciano is famed for its hearty food and of course its red wine and so is another medieval hilltop town in Val d’Orcia, Montalcino, made wealthy by its prestigious Brunello wine aged for a minimum of five years.
