The island is a favourite with European royalty and Hollywood celebrities, who particularly love the Costa Smeralda on the northeast coast. It was created and named by Prince Karim Aga Khan in the 1960s when he bought 7,000 acres of arid hillside beside the emerald sea and built a holiday resort primarily for himself and his well-heeled friends. In the south, the delightful capital Cagliari has a city centre marina close to the international airport.
Sardinia sits in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea below Corsica and 120 miles west of the Italian mainland. It’s the second biggest island in the Mediterranean, an autonomous region where residents speak both Italian and a local dialect.
